Banks St Stephens C of E Primary School

World Book Day

World book day was hugely successful, we made lots of money from the book fair and a great effort was made parents and children with their fancy dress. Mrs McCauley held a special assembly all about books of various genres. She read a really funny story about crayons too!

                                                                                  Friday 12th February

This year our school book fair will be coming slightly prior to World Book Day itself:

Book Fair – Weds 24th Feb – Tues 2nd March

World Book Day   - Thurs 3rd March

Book Fair   The book fair will be open after school from 3.15 – 4pm so please come along and have a look. There is a range of quality books books on offer as well as lots of fun stationery. We will be giving the children their £1 book vouchers on the first day of the book fair as they can be used there or alternatively in book shops / supermarkets between 29.02.16 and 27.03.16.

 Library   Please support our book fair as any commission that we receive goes stright back into new titles for the library for all our children to enjoy. We have a fabulous colourful  library with over 7,000 books for all ages as well as our own librarian (which is all incredibly rare in this age of budget squeeze).

We are currently in the process of refreshing our library to try to encourage our children to try to taste more books. The fiction section is being changed from the traditional alphabetical format to grouping books by what kind of story they are. We have 5 genre sections:

Red = Adventure

Blue  = Real Life

Orange = Humour

Purple = Fantasy

Green = Sport

World Book Day  On this day (Thurs 3rd March) the children get to take part in a whole range of book related activities in classes and as a whole school. Children are also given the opportunity to dress up (no donations needed). This year we are asking the children to choose to either:

  • dress up as a favourite book character

  • wear clothes from their favourite book genre colour.

Dressing up as book characters

This year the World Book Day website ( has come up with 18 ‘easy and fantastic step-by-step costumes to make the job easier. It includes characters such as:

The BFG        Tom Gates     Angelina Ballerina      The Cat in the Hat

Dennis the Menace        Elmer     Gangsta Granny          The Gruffalo

Horrid Henry

Wimpy Kid         Where’s Wally / Wenda      The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Worst Witch      Willy Wonka     Mr Strong / Little Miss Sunshine

Clothes from book genre colour

If children would prefer they could come to school wearing clothes in the colour of their favourite type of fiction story - as to match our up – coming Library Launch  ( wearing as much of that colour as is possible.)

Red = Adventure

Blue  = Real Life

Orange = Humour

Purple = Fantasy

Green = Sport

There will be class prizes for the most imaginative costume / clothing of the day.

We hope that these 2 options and this proir warning should make the costume / clothing preparation for the big day more manageable. The children really do enjoy themselves in all of this.

Looking forward to all of the book fun to come . . .
